Rooster

Recommended Experience Level: Intermediate

Adoption Fee: $4,000

9 year old sorrel gelding, 15hh

❋ Behavior

Gentle, in your pocket type. Enjoys human interaction. No bite or kick. No vices. Occasionally difficult to catch- better with treats or easy to catch herd mates. Loads, ties, ground ties. Stands for farrier. Picks up all feet. Tolerant of baths and fly spray when haltered or stalled.

❋ Training

Thoroughly trained with all buttons. W/T/L with ease. Good back and stop. Left lead stronger than right. Stands to mount, easy to bridle. Very willing and responsive to cues. Exceptional ground manners. Can be apprehensive and watchy with new things, but willing with confident rider. No buck or rear. Has done well in both arena and trail setting.

❋ Maintenance

Easy keeper- no special feeding requirements. Currently shod on front due to hoof wall damage and mild lameness on hard footing. May not be needed long term. Recommend active surveillance with experienced farrier (preferably with access to X-rays) to ensure continued hoof progress. Short term use of biotin supplement for hoof growth may be beneficial.

❋ Health Considerations

Continuous improvement of left forelimb hoof wall defect. Unsure if defect was the result of a previous healing white line disease vs. keratoma removal. No concerns regarding defect at this time- anticipated to resolve.

Mild (2/5) lameness on L forelimb and R forelimb (1/5) when on hard ground, no lameness on soft ground. Hoof testers negative. Normal flexion. Blocked to a palmar digital block. Radiographs unexciting overall. Both coffin joints injected 4/20/26 and shoes reset with pre and post farrier rads. Systemically healthy horse.

Ideal Home

This is an athletic horse who is accustomed to work. He is reported to have history at feed lots and gathering cattle. The ideal home is one that will give Rooster a job, as he is a talented horse with a heart to work. Intermediate rider recommended due to his training level and occasional watchiness. A confident beginner could be considered if working with a trainer.
