❋ BehaviorGentle, kind, respectful. No bite, kick, buck. No vices. Easy to catch, respects space, stands for farrier. Picks up all feet with ease. Good for baths and fly spray. Loads and unloads easy. Easy to tack and bridle. Easy to medicate. Will do whatever is asked of her- currently by a 10 year old child. She is a boss mare and acts like it when new horses are introduced. Do not recommend placing her with other strong willed mares.
❋ TrainingNot fancy broke, but does well with confident beginners and basic cues. Good back and stop. Fantastic ground manners. No spook, perfect trail horse. Will lead line small children. Will move away from mounting block but stands for ground mounting. Walk or trot with ease. We do not lope her due to her navicular and asthma. Arena riding not ideal due to dust.
❋ MaintenanceEasy keeper- no grain needed. Currently on ration balancer but unlikely needed. Due to asthma, hay is hosed down and fed as flakes (no round bales). Requires wedged shoes on forelimbs every 6 weeks for management of navicular disease. Access to a stall may be helpful for asthma flare ups.
❋ Health ConsiderationsRaven has heaves/asthma, which has been thoroughly worked up and managed since arrival to HRER. Texas summers are incredibly hard on her, requiring stall confinement with fans/misters, nebulizing, as well as steroids and bronchodilators to keep her comfortable. Her symptoms resolve when at an air conditioned barn and during cooler months, so vets suspect her asthma management and quality of life will greatly improve if moved out of Texas.
Raven was diagnosed with navicular disease in both forelimbs. With consistent farrier work and corrective shoeing (wedges) she shows no evidence of lameness or pain. She will require shoes for the rest of her life to maintain her comfort and rideability.
Ideal Home
This is an incredibly gentle horse who can teach kids how to work with horses. The ideal home for Raven is a family who is looking for a first horse or someone looking for a safe horse for kids to ride or interact with. She is happiest on pasture with her buddies, where she can be in charge.
